About the book

After being homeschooled for four years, Auggie, who suffers from a severely deformed face, enterS the fifth grade at Beecher Prep School and does his best to be just an ordinary kid with an extraordinary face.

What's Auggie's relationship with each of his family members?

Auggie's parents don't see Auggie as ordinary either. They see Auggie as an extraordinary kid. Auggie thinks he's the only person in the world who realizes how ordinary he is. Nevertheless, they are all in good condition. Auggie is homeschooled by his mum until he turned 10. Via, his sister, truly cares for Auggie and will always defend him.

Via sometimes feels jealous of the attention that Auggie receives because of his deformity. She often scolds herself and feels guilty for feeling that way. Via never used to see August the way other people saw him. She knew she didn't look exactly normal, but she really couldn't understand why strangers seemed so shocked when they saw Auggie. But when Via came home after four weeks of staying with her grandmother, she felt very strange. August ran over to welcome her home, and for this tiny fraction of a moment she saw him not the way other people saw him. She was surprised because she had never seen him like that. After that, she hated herself for feeling that. She was thankful that only lasted for a second. Via accepts people's opinions that she has a brother with a birth defect but she doesn't want to be defined in this negative way.

Auggie's parents could help to make their lives more normal. I think they should counsel Via and even August so that they can be less worried or not worried at all. Things usually have a way of working out. Have faith that things will work out, maybe not how you planned, but just how they're supposed to. A positive mind will give you a positive life.

Via has to accept that Auggie needs more help and guidance because of his situation. She should never have a negative outlook when she has so much to be positive about. Appreciate everything and regret nothing.

Auggie's parents always give what's best for Auggie. They always guide him in almost everything. Hence, they are helping Auggie to become a better and positive person. Respect and trust are always their center. It's what makes them one and overcome any obstacles or problems. Trust doesn't mean that they can, it's knowing that they will.

What is a good friend?

A good friend is trustworthy, honest, very dependable, loyal, caring, expresses empathy for others, non-judgemental, good listener, supportive, self-confident, positive, fun to be around, and so much more.

Jack and Summer demonstrate these qualities. They are Auggie's real and true friends. Auggie is also a good friend. He does his best to be with them, tries to make them laugh and always helps them in any way. Auggie accepts who he is. The harder the life, the stronger you will become. The stronger you become, the easier life will be. No amount of self-improvement can make up for any lack of self-acceptance.

What are some of the challenges that arise?

Other kids call him rat boy, freak, monster, Freddy Krueger, E.T., gross-out, lizard-face and mutant. Auggie had a hard time coping with other kids in school. Auggie's grandmother died. Via's friends changed a lot and she doesn't like it. The parents of other students want Auggie to be out of the school.

They had overcome these problems by helping each other and never mind what other people think. But for me, God doesn't give challenges that we can't overcome. Sometimes we win, sometimes we learn.

Auggie is courageous in anything he does. He doesn't really show what he feels except to his own self.

Life challenges are not supposed to paralyse you, they are supposed to help you discover who you are. Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. Challenges are what make life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes them meaningful.

To be kind is more important than to be right. Many times, what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks, but a special heart that listens. We rise by lifting others. Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.

Bullying

Auggie knows the first time the meets Julian that he will be a bully. They were hanging out to tour Auggie in the school, together with Jack and Charlotte. Julian is being kinda rude. He is avoiding to touch Auggie and he's asking mean questions. Julian calls Auggie rude names and he tries to convince anyone in school that if they touch him, they will develop "The Plague". Julian has the power to force to join in his cruelty toward Auggie and Jack. The oldest students insult Auggie because of his face

However, Auggie remained being courageous. If people are trying to bring you down, it only means that you are above them. Stop trying so hard to fit in, you're perfect the way you are, nothing is better than being yourself because you can't blend in when you are born to stand out.

Betrayal

Jack betrays Auggie by talking badly behind his back. Auggie felt like his face was on fire while he walked down the stairs. He was sweating under his costume and he started crying. He wanted to disappear at that moment. He was really hurt.

To solve their individual conflicts and cope with the pain of betrayal, Via and Auggie accepted the challenges. Everything happens for a reason. You are given this life because you're strong enough to live it.
